SBI Chairman, Ranjish Kumar has said the claims made by financial fugitive Vijay Mallya regarding his offer to repay the principal amount of Rs 9,000 crore back is false. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Mr Kumar said the banks are still waiting, reported The Indian Express.
Earlier, Mallya had tweeted that he was offering to pay back the principal amount he owed, saying, “I humbly request banks and government to take it.”
However, Mr Ranjish says that even as his extradition from the UK is close by, he has not offered anything. “SBI is the lead consortium. As of date, we have not received any offers,” he added.
Kumar pats the government’s extradition of the liquor baron saying that there is clear writing on the wall that one can’t default and abscond.“It is a commendable effort by the government as far as this case is concerned,” he said.
The UK court had critiqued Indian banks for sanctioning loans without proper credit reports. The judge there called the issue as “continuing failures” by the banks and said it is unclear whether the problem was designed with hidden financial motives.
