A lookout notice has been issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam against former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar, reports Hindustan Times.
The moves comes after the Supreme Court on Friday (24 May) rejected Kumar’s request for extending protection to him from being arrested.
The investigating agency had told the apex court that Kumar was responsbile for tampering and destroying evidence against accused persons in the case.
The Trinamool-led West Bengal government and Kumar had claimed that there was a political vendetta against the former top cop, and that there was conflict of interest in the case because some family members of former interim director of the agency M Nageswara Rao were suspects in the matter.
It is believed that up to 1.7 million depositors were cheated out of approximately Rs 3,500 crore in the Saradha chit fund scam. The fund’s founder Sudipta Sen had submitted a confessional letter to the CBI back in 2013 detailing how he had paid massive bribes to politicians and other powerful individuals.
