CBSE Junks At Least One Aspect Of RTE, To Restart Class X Board Exams From 2018

The Class X examinations will make a comeback with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) giving the go-ahead for a proposal to reintroduce compulsory Class X board examination from the 2017-2018 academic year. While 80 per cent weightage will be based on marks scored in the board examinations, 20 per cent weightage will be given to school-based evaluation or internal assessments, India Today quoted sources as saying.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the CBSE governing body in New Delhi, where it also resolved to make the three-language formula up to Class X, mandatory. Currently, schools follow this from Class VI to Class VIII. Board officials may also put forward a recommendation to the Centre that those languages, which are listed in schedule VIII of the Constitution should be taught under the three language formula, while languages which are "purely foreign" should be taught as a "fourth language as an elective subject”.
The Class X board examination for CBSE schools was made optional by the Congress government from 2011 under the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system mandated by the Right to Education Act.
