Central Govt Approves Transmission Line Works Worth Rs 1310 Crore To Link Remote Villages In Ladakh: Report

The intra-state transmission works that aim to connect the distant villages of Ladakh to the grid and subsequently achieve carbon neutrality in the region by phasing out the DG (Diesel Generator) has been approved by the central government at a modified cost of Rs 1309.71 crore.
The entire project includes the 220 KV S/C transmission lines of D/C tower (total 307 km), Phyang to Diskit (Nubra) (100 km), Kargil-Padum (Zanskar) (207 km), and a couple of 220/33 KV Grid substation, with one each at Padum, Zanskar (50 MVA) and Diskit, Nubra (50 MVA).
The REC Transmission Projects Company Limited (RECTPCL) and the Power Grid Corporation India Limited (PGCIL) are the project implementing and project management agencies for this initiative respectively.
“These transmission lines will link far-flung villages to the Grid and phase out DG sets used in far-flung villages, thus taking one more step towards achieving Carbon Neutrality in Ladakh. This will also provide the Army and far-flung villages with clean power round the clock,” Ravinder Kumar, secretary of power in Ladakh, was quoted by the Economic Times.
These projects were a part of the Prime Ministers Development Package (PMDP) but works couldn’t be initiated on it due to several issues.
However, Lt Governor of Ladakh R K Mathur along with his administration and the public representatives took concerted efforts to round off the tendering of these works. Now, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has revised the detailed project report (DPR) cost of these projects from Rs 354.74 crore to Rs 1309.71 crore.
