The centre on Tuesday (29 January) filed a writ petition before the Supreme Court seeking permission to release all excess, non-disputed land which has been acquired around the Ram Janmabhoomi site, reports India Today.

The petition seeks that the land be returned back to the Ram Janmabhoomi trust. The report claims that the centre had acquired 67.703 acres of land via the Acquisition of Certain Area at Ayodhya Act, 1993. This includes a plot where the Babri Masjid once stood.

The petition asserts that dispute only pertains to 0.313 acres of land and the rest can be returned to its rightful owners.

Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy took to Twitter to elaborate upon the discussion he had with Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the matter.

The centre’s petition comes in the wake of yet another delay in the Ram Temple proceedings.

The Supreme Court hearing scheduled for 29 January before a five-member Constitutional bench was cancelled due to the unavailability of Justice S A Bobde.
