The Centre has proposed abolishing all posts that remain vacant for over five years and has directed ministries and departments to submit a report on this, reports PTI. An office memorandum from the Ministry of Finance has asked all ministry and departments to submit an “action-taken” report on the matter. The memorandum also added that some ministries have responded but others had responded in a ‘piecemeal’ manner.

All ministries and departments have now been directed to submit a comprehensive report on posts that have been lying vacant for over five years. Joint secretaries and financial advisors of different departments and ministries have been handed the responsibility to identify such posts both within the ministry as well as all departments and organisations that fall under it.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has followed up and directed all its additional secretaries, joint secretaries, chiefs of paramilitary forces and other attached organisations to submit reports as well. Estimates say that several thousand posts have been vacant for over half a decade in the Centre.
