In a major win for the nation's drive to break the back of Naxalites, 28 ultras surrendered at a police camp in Chikpal area of Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh before state police and CRPF jawans on Sunday (20 October), reports Asian News International (ANI).

The development also gains significance as four of the 28 who have surrendered had rewards on their heads. While one named Manglu Madkami had carried a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head, the three others named Baman Kawasi, Handa and Podiyami Gangi carried rewards of Rs 1 lakh each.

Each of the 28 Naxals who have surrendered have been rewarded with Rs 10,000 by the Government of Chhattisgarh under its Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy, to assist them in making a fresh start in life free of violence and terror.

The Naxals are believed to have surrendered owing to their disenchantment with the Maoist's ideology and also driven by their hope to witness development in their native regions.
