Chinese Smartphone Major Xiaomi To Set Up Three New Manufacturing Plants In India

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi is going to set up two new mobile phone manufacturing plants along with a new TV manufacturing unit in India, Mint reports.
Accordingly, 99 per cent of the company’s phones along with 100 per cent of its televisions that is sold in India will be produced domestically.
Xiaomi India Head and Global Vice President Manu Jain explained that one of the two proposed hubs is already functioning in partnership with DBG India in Haryana. The second plant will be established by Chinese electronics maker BYD in Tamil Nadu. Apparently, the company has planned a plant each in north and south India in view of any possible future lockdowns in either side of the country.
“We would love to see India as an export hub. We started exporting in small quantities last year to nearby countries like Bangladesh and Nepal. Right now, the number one priority for us for the Indian business is to meet the local demand, which we believe is significantly more than what we are supplying. Once we meet 100% of the local demand is when we will start thinking of further increasing out export,” Jain was quoted in the report.
Meanwhile, the television manufacturing hub will be set up by Hyderabad-based television manufacturer Radiant in Telangana. Xiaomi already has a couple of mobile manufacturing hubs in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh that is operated by Foxconn and Flex along with Dixon Technologies respectively.
Jain even went on to say that a vast majority of the phone components that include printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) and sub-boards, chargers and battery, back panels are domestically manufactured in the country. Additionally, Xiaomi is also set to kick off the production of camera modules in India from the ongoing year onward.
