Even as the Madras High Court yesterday (16 August) rejected a plea by a Madras Christian College professor to have a show cause notice against him issued by an internal complaints committee of the institute regarding sexual harassment allegations against him, the bench also noted that a general feeling among parents that christian institutions were “highly unsafe” for their daughters’ future, reports The Times of India.

“There is a general feeling among parents of students, especially female students, that co-educational study in Christian institutions is highly unsafe for the future of their children,” said Justice S Vaidyanathan.

The judge also made some other observations about the conduct of Christian institutions, noting that they had often been accused of being involved in “compulsory conversion” of people belonging to other faiths.

“...Though they impart good education, their preaching of morality will be a million-dollar question,” the judge remarked.

Regarding the reasoning for its decision in the present case, the court laid out that the principles of natural justice had been correctly followed by the complaints committee in the matter of the professor who is being accused of sexual harassment by at least 34 students.
