Multinational tech conglomerate Cisco has announced plans to set up free high-speed Wi-Fi zones across India partnering with gStation, reports Deccan Herald. Google’s gStation will join Cisco to work out a platform to provide access to free, open and high-speed net connectivity to the public.
The pilot project will soon kick-off across 25 prime locations in Bengaluru, in collaboration with a local Internet Service Provider (ISP). By September, around 200 locations in the IT-city will be dotted with high-speed Wi-Fi stations followed by additional 300 in the second phase, said Cisco.
Google has been providing free Wi-Fi services across select railway stations in the country for the last three years, in collaboration with Rail Tel and BSNL.
“Moving to high-speed internet access will benefit millions of users. The success of digitisation and digital citizen services is closely tied to the proliferation of high-speed internet. The demand for public Wi-Fi spots is expected to go up by 100x over the next three years,” said President of Cisco India and SAARC Sameer Garde.
