Coastal Surveillance Radar Station To Be Installed In Andamans As Part Of Efforts To Boost Monitoring In Indian Ocean

In a bid to boost surveillance and improve monitoring in the Indian Ocean, the Indian Coast Guard plans to set up a Coastal Surveillance Radar (CSR) station in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, reports The New Indian Express.
The station will come up at Car Nicobar’s Keating Point; authorities have selected a parcel of land in the tribal reserve which will be utilised for the project. Being the northernmost of the Nicobar Islands, Car Nicobar has a very strategic location in the Andaman and Nicobar islands archipelago.
Once set up, the CSR station will be able to detect vessels in the sub-20 metre range, and will be able to operate in all weather conditions. Approval for the plan has already been given by the Centre and local authorities. The project will require an estimated outlay of Rs 9 crore.
Only recently, an Indian built CSR system was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Maldives. India is looking to create an elaborate network of CSR stations across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to massively ramp up its surveillance capabilities at the sea.
