Coming Soon Across India: Hand-Held Terminals For TTEs To Check Real-Time Berth Availability On Trains

Indian Railways will soon be providing hand-held terminals (HHTs) to their staff in an effort to digitise the on-board ticket checking. This will also allow the TTEs to allot vacant berths in trains.
On Friday (December 14), the first round of HHTs were introduced in Patna (Rajdhani Express) and will be soon given across the nation. The news came in a circular that was issued on December 11.
Live Mint quoted the circular which read, “A project to introduce HHTs on Indian Railways for computerised on board ticket checking and allotment of vacant berths has been conceptualised and tested and is ready for rollout on all-India basis.”
Those passengers who board trains from stations will be shown real-time updates about availability of berths with the new system in place. Live Mint quoted a railways official as saying, “It will also result in greater availability of vacant berths to wait-listed passengers. Hence, more passenger satisfaction. More bookings will also result in increased railway revenue. It will also give a boost to the digital India initiative.”
This works as a morale boost to the staff since their task of looking into reservation charts will be history after the introduction of HHTs.
