Police Commissioner (Gurugram) Muhammad Akil on Tuesday said that the accused in the case of assault of a Muslim young man in Jacubpura could be a local criminal and probably not associated with any organisation, reports The Hindu.

He said that there were certain leads in connection to the case, adding,“Efforts are on to identify and arrest the accused.”

The officer said that while Mohmmad Barkat Alam was assaulted by one man, many people present there at the time of incident tried to intervene.

While Alam has maintained that the accused asked him to chant “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Shri Ram”, Police Commissioner Muhammad Akil said he could be tutored by the people on this after the incident.

In the CCTV footage retrieved by the police, some of the claims of Alam were found to be false. Neither was his skull cap removed forcibly, nor his Kurta was torn.

Regarding the CCTV footage, the officer said that the accused is seen hitting the victim but the CCTV footage is not clear. “Since the CCTV footage is not clear, we believe in what the victim has told us,” he said, adding, “The truth would come out only after the accused is arrested.”
