The Congress on Monday (9 September) announced the appointment of Anshul Meira Kumar and Sharmishtha Mukherjee as the new national spokespersons, India Today reported.

Congress chief spokesperson and communication department in-charge Randeep Surjewala said in a press note, “Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the appointment of the Shri Anshul Meira Kumar and Ms Sharmistha Mukherjee as National Spokespersons of the AICC.”

It is also important to know that while Sharmistha Mukherjee is the daughter of former President of India and several-time union minister Pranab Mukherjee, Anshul Kumar is the son of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.

After the announcement, Mukherjee tweeted thanking the party president Sonia Gandhi, and Randeep Surjewala.

The decision has come at a time when the party has been struggling to get its grounds back in the country after its defeat in two consecutive general elections.

Although Ms Gandhi is acting as the interim president, the party is also currently under a leadership crisis after Rahul Gandhi’s resignation post 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
