The official twitter account of the Congress party today (8 April) committed a faux pass after it inadvertently ended up crediting the BJP for low inflation rates during its rule.
In the tweet Congress alleged that the middle class is barely able to afford food under the current regime and attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for claiming the arrival of Acche Din. The Sonia Gandhi led party also mocked Prime Minister Modi's Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative by spinning it as Kharcha Pe Charcha.
In the accompanying infographic the Congress made a comparative analysis of current food prices in Delhi with the ones purportedly prevalent during the end of UPA-2 rule in April 2014.
Soon social media users pointed out that the graphic proved the prevalence of low food inflation as prices of the quoted commodities have risen by Rs 3 to Rs 17 per kilogram or litre.
The RBI currently prescribes a year on year inflation target of 2 to 6 per cent as part of its flexible inflation targeting framework on 2016. Both high inflation and deflation contribute to low consumer spending thereby hampering GDP growth.
