In a major development, senior leader of the Congress party Shatrughan Singha on Saturday (22 February) called on the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Arif Alvi and discussed the Kashmir issue as per a statement issued by the latter's office, reports Hindustan Times.

The two had held a meeting at the Governor House in Pakistan's Lahore city even as Sinha is on a personal visit to Pakistan to attend the wedding of the son of one of his friends. The two are also said to have aligned together on the need for the two nations to work for promotion of peace in the subcontinent.

The relations between the two nations hit a nadir after the suicide bombing manoeuvre carried out in Pulwama last year when India lost 44 jawans from its Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The relations took a further hit after the Indian Parliament decided to deoperationalise Article 370 in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Pakistan claims the Kashmir valley is its part and calls it an occupied territory while itself holding illegal control over Indian sovereign territory of Kashmir.
