Connecting The Northeast: Government Okays Four-Lane Highway Along India-Bhutan Border

Giving a boost to connectivity in Northeast India, the Modi government has agreed in-principle to build a four-lane highway along the India-Bhutan border, said Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The 264 km-long highway will cover the four border districts – Udalguri, Baksa, Chirang and Kokhrajar.
According to a report in The Shillong Times, the project is currently awaiting environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF).
The Centre has, over the last few years, increased its focus on infrastructure in the northeast. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), in order to expedite road construction, created the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) to handle upgrading and maintenance works in the northeast.
