Controversial stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui who has been arrested over accusations of making derogatory comments against Hindu gods, has been denied bail by an Indore court, Press Trust of India has reported.

The MP Police on 1 January arrested five stand-up comedians for allegedly insulting Hindu gods and goddesses in Indore.

The arrested comedians include Munawar Faruqui, Edvin Anthony, Prakhar Vyas, Priyam Vyas and Nalin Yadav.

They were arrested after a Hindu group filed an FIR against them, accusing the comedians of “indecent and disgraceful” remarks against Hindu Gods, Goddesses and customs.

It has been alleged that the event at the cafe was organised without permission and social distancing rules were violated there. The FIR added that vulgar jokes and provocative remarks were allegedly made at the event to hurt religious sentiments.

The lawyer opposing the bail plea has also claimed that the stand-up show was full of obscenity despite the presence of minors in the audience.

The comedians have reportedly been booked under India Penal Code’s Sections 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), 298 (deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 34 (common intention).
