The Azad Maidan police in Mumbai city has initiated criminal action against 150 participants of the Tablighi Jamaat Markaz (gathering), at Nizamuddin in New Delhi, for refusing to report their attendance in the event to civic authorities, Mumbai Mirror reported.

Mumbai Mirror quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police Sangramsingh Nishandaras saying that the offences were registered following a complaint initiated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). They have been booked under IPC including Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), Section 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and Section 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life).

The BMC had made issued an appeal to those who attended the congregation, but did not report to the concerned authorities for quarantine or testing, to call on the civic body helpline and get the mandatory checks done. Mumbai cops also had made a similar appeal.

“Its our request and your responsibility to report your travel details on 1916, the @mybmc helpline, if you attended Tablighi Markaz at Nizamuddin, New Delhi. Those failing to cooperate will face strict action under IPC, DM (Disaster Management) Act & Epidemic Act,” the Mumbai Police tweeted.

Earlier this week, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope asked attendees of the Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin in Delhi last month to cooperate with authorities to ensure the spread of novel coronavirus can be stopped.

The police had gathered information from 200 Markaz attendees who had been tracked down earlier
