Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (23 January) paid homage to the founder of Shiv Sena Bal Thackeray on his 94th birth anniversary, reports Asian News International.
PM Modi tweeted, “Tributes to the great Balasaheb Thackeray on his Jayanti. Courageous and indomitable, he never hesitated from raising issues of public welfare. He always remained proud of Indian ethos and values. He continues to inspire millions.”
Bal Thackeray was born in Pune on 23 January 23 1926. He started his career as a cartoonist with the English language daily called ‘The Free Press Journal’. He later started his own political weekly ‘Marmik’ through which he campaigned against the growing influence of non-Marathis in Mumbai.
He later went on to establish Shiv Sena in 1966 to fight for the rights of Maharashtrians in Mumbai’s political and professional landscape.
