The Jammu and Kashmir Police has come out vehemently denying the unfounded news reports of cow vigilantes having killed a man named Nayeem Shah in Badarwah area of the state when he was reportedly transporting cattle, the Business Standard reports.
Owing to the uproar and violence erupted in the region because of the spread of the fake news, the officials had to impose a curfew in Bhaderwah town, Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir to keep the law and order situation in check.
The police administration of the state has condemned the 'irresponsible' reporting of the sensitive issue and has rebutted that no such information about cow vigilantism has been ascertained so far in the investigations.
The Army was called in to assist the civil administration to contain the situation on the ground, while authorities had to suspend mobile internet services to stop the spreading of instigating posts and pictures.
The J&K Police said that they had detained five people for questioning in connection with the murder, and added that there would be no relaxation in the curfew yet.
