United States (US) President Donald Trump at the G7 summit in Canada said that Crimea is a part of Russia because most of the people there speak Russian, Daily Mail has reported.
The G7 summit in Canada witnessed several tense scenes with the US under Trump taking several different positions from its earlier policies. One of the things brought up by President Trump was re-inducting Russia into the formerly G8 group representing the most advanced nations in the world.
Quoting anonymous sources, the report said that Trump appeared to defend Russian action in Crimea since most of the the Crimean people spoke Russian. The group during former President Barak Obama’s term had kicked out Russia for annexing Crimea.
Trump also allegedly called Ukraine one of the most corrupt nations in the world, questioning why other G7 leaders were siding with it.
The White House spokesperson however refused to confirm the comment.
Trump had earlier, before leaving for the summit, made it known that he wanted Russia to be readmitted to the group. 'This used to be the G8, not the G7,' Trump had . then said during the summit.
'The G8 is a more meaningful group than the G7,’ he added.
