The Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex (KWMC) in Chennai had recently reported more than 50 COVID-19 cases. The wholesale fruit and vegetable trading centres at Madhavram and Koyambedu continue to be a hub of COVID-19 violations, Times of India reports

Most of the sellers, buyers, and visitors do not maintain social distancing, nor do they wear a mask. Nearly 3000-4000 people flock to Madhavram daily, whereas Koyambedu records a footfall of 10000 individuals per day.

These include customers, loadmen, employees in wholesale shops, and alike. In the last five months, fines worth more than Rs 15 lakhs have been collected from people for not donning masks at the temporary wholesale fruit market in Madhavram alone.

S Srinivasan is the president of the Chennai Fruits Commission Agents Association. Admitting the aforementioned occurrences, he quipped, “There cannot be any second opinion on following norms to contain the spread of Coronavirus. We are reiterating to our traders to ensure that there were no violations.”

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CDMA) oversees the operations at these two places. The organization continues to persist that it is imposing hefty fines on the ones who are violating the required norms and regulations.
