Cutting Edge Tech: IIT-Kharagpur To Get India’s First Ever PetaFlop High-Performance Computing Facility

Under the National Supercomputing Mission, India's first state-of-the-art one PetaFlop high-performance computing (HPC) facility and datacenter ecosystem will be set up at the Centre for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS) at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur).
“This facility will be built, managed and operated under CCDS to provide large-scale computational support to the researchers of IIT Kharagpur, who are engaged in research activities in diverse areas of national importance,” said a statement by IIT-KGP.
To set up the facility, IIT-KGP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an autonomous scientific society of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.
"The facility is expected to come up in the next 3-4 months with the work to be carried in three concurrent phases of assembling, assembling and manufacturing and thirdly design and manufacturing with all products and accessories indigenously designed and manufactured in India,” said Dr Hemant Darbari, Director General, C-DAC to IndiaToday.
The Supercomputer will provide manifold improvement in output and efficiency of research work in diverse fields like computational biology, drug design, atmospheric modelling, Computational fluid dynamics, Computational Chemistry, Computational Physics, cryptanalysis and numerical mathematics.

Recently under the same Mission, a supercomputer with a computing capacity of 833 teraflops called Param Shivay was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at IIT BHU. The project has been completed at the cost of Rs 32.5 crore.
