The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry has extended an invitation to Tibetian spiritual leader Dalai Lama by saying that he is "welcome to come to Taiwan again to propagate the Buddhist teachings", Hindustan Times has reported.

The Foreign Ministry had added that the Dalai Lama's application to visit would be handled, "in accordance with the principle of mutual respect and at a time of convenience for both sides".

The spiritual leader had last visited Taiwan in 2009 and a similar visit is bound to anger China which has in the past referred to him as a "separatist".

The Dalai Lama who was forced to flee Tibet after China's annexation is one of the biggest critics of the Communist Party led rule. A few months ago he had said that though China has physically occupied Tibet but it can never control the spirit and mind of the Tibetan people.

He added that new generations of Tibetans are as determined to oppose Chinese occupation of Tibet as the earlier ones.
