Farmer Protests in Delhi (Doordarshan)
The police opened one carriageway on Ghazipur-Ghaziabad (UP Gate) border that has allowed traffic between Delhi-Ghaziabad to pass through this route after 48 days. The UP Gate had been closed down due to the farmers’ protests and the violence that took place due to their tractor rally at the national capital on Republic Day.
However, the other five carriageways linking Delhi and Ghaziabad are still shut down. Hence, commuters travelling to Delhi from Meerut, Ghaziabad and certain places in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are compelled to take other alternate routes.
This particular carriageway was also temporarily opened for six hours on 2nd March to ease movement of emergency vehicles but was blocked again with iron and concrete barricades and deployment of police personnel, as senior police officers said there was no official order for opening the route.
“In view of the prevailing law and order situation at the Ghazipur border and keeping in mind the public convenience, the carriageway of NH-24 going towards Ghaziabad from Delhi has been opened in due consultation with the police officials of Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh, in public interest,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Vinit Kumar was quoted by Hindustan Times.
However, commute through the Ghazipur-Ghaziabad border has been hampered ever since scores of farmers gathered there to protest against the three agricultural laws on 25th-26th November upon being stopped from entering Delhi.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police has advised motorists coming to Delhi from Ghaziabad side to take the EDM Mall Kaushambi, Kondli, Surya Nagar, Bhopra, Apsara, Anand Vihar and Loni borders instead or even come to the national capital via Noida.
