Delhi HC To Pronounce Order Today On Centre’s Plea Challenging Stay On Execution Of Nirbhaya Convicts

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday (4 February) is set to pronounce order on Union Government's plea challenging the stay on the execution of the four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, reports Hindustan Times.
Earlier on 2 February, Delhi HC's Justice Suresh Kumar Kait had held special hearings on Centre’s plea on Saturday and Sunday. After hearing the plea, Justice Kait had reserved the order on the matter for 4 February.
The order to stay the execution of the four convicts in the case had been given by a trial court in Delhi on 31 January.
Following the stay on the execution proceedings, parents of the victim had urged upon the court to decide on the Union Government's plea in favour of execution in an expeditious manner. To the same, Justice Kait had assured them that the order would be passed at the earliest.
Earlier On 17 January, a Delhi court had fixed 1 February as the date for execution of the four convicts, Mukesh Kumar, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma and Akshay Kumar, who are all presently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
However, the trial court on 31 January had deferred the hanging after an application was filed to stay the execution as mercy plea of one of the convicts was pending.
