Delhi University’s Boost For Students: 30 New Courses, 282 More College Seats In The Offing

The academic council (AC) of Delhi University, in a move that hopes to benefit students, has approved the introduction of 30 new courses across colleges, Indian Express has reported.
According to the report, the courses comprise both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and will be taught in a choice-based credit system (CBCS) format from the 2019-20 academic session.
“The requests by the colleges to start new courses have been granted. A total of 40 courses were proposed out of which 30 have been approved of. They will be introduced in the new academic year. The courses were approved by the standing committee which passed it on to the AC,” member of the academic council and professor of Sri Aurobindo College Hans Raj was quoted in the report as saying.
In addition, the university will also launch 10 vocational courses.
Besides introduction of new courses, a proposal by several colleges to increase the number of seats in their ongoing courses was also approved in the council meeting. There will be an increase of 282 seats across colleges in the varsity.
Implementation of the new courses and the expansion of seats may add up to as much as 25 per cent new seats for students from this year onwards.
“With the introduction of so many courses and the 10 per cent reservation coming into the picture, we will be expanding seats by as much as 25 per cent. This will be an additional burden on the faculty and administration. We will need 3,000 more teachers to join the university,” Hans Raj said.
