Four fresh cases were reported on Monday (13 April) from Mumbai’s Dharavi that has emerged as one of the biggest hotspots of the coronavirus outbreak in Maharashtra, taking the total tally to 47, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said.

Apart from the increase in cases, one person passed away on Monday and the death toll stood at 5 in the densely populated slum area.

Earlier, the Mumbai police had barricaded the Dharavi region to contain the growing coronavirus cases.

Among the new cases, three emerged from Madina Nagar, Janata Cooperative Housing Society and Gulmohar chawl of Dharavi, while reports of a 60-year-old man who died earlier at Sion Hospital came out positive with COVID-19, the BMC official added.

"High risk contact tracing is being done," he said.

So far at least 47 cases have been confirmed from 16 colonies of one of Asia’s largest slum area.

Maharashtra remained the worst hit state with a total number of positive cases rising to 1,982. In line with the development, the state government has decided to extend the lockdown till 30 April.
