Just four days after he was sworn-in as the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump said his country considers India a “true friend and partner in addressing challenges around the world”, according to the White House statement. The newly appointed president also extended an invitation to Modi, asking him to visit the US later this year.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Modi said he had a warm conversation with President Trump. He said he has invited President Trump to visit India.

According to the statement issued by the White House, Modi and Trump discussed ways to cooperate in economic and defence sectors and exchanged ideas on regional security issues. Modi is the fifth world leader Trump spoke to after assuming office. The two leaders agreed to “stand shoulder to shoulder in the global fight against terrorism”, the White House statement read.

The White House statement said, “ President Trump looked forward to hosting Prime Minister Modi in the United States later this year.” This can be taken as potential confirmation of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US in the next few months.
