DU Admissions 2019: Student Moves HC Against Making Maths Compulsory In Best Of Four Subjects For Economics (H) Admission

An aspirant seeking admission in Economics (Hons) course in Delhi University has moved the High Court to remove mathematics from the ‘best of four’ subject rule, the India Today reports.
From the academic year 2019, the DU introduced maths into the best of four subjects for Economics (Hons) course, leading to various students wanting the rule to be removed.
The petition filed by the student, says: “That by the introduction of this arbitral (sic) change in the merit-based admission, the petitioner will suffer the grave loss of not securing a seat in one of the prime institutions of the respondent University.”
The petition adds that the student had secured 98.75 per cent in her best of four subjects (BFS) if mathematics is not included. However, her percentage falls down to by a whole per cent point to 97.75 per cent if maths is included in the process.
Despite the DU mandating the policy for all colleges in the varsity, minority colleges like St Stephens and Jesus and Mary College (JMC) are following the old rule in which students only needed to pass in mathematics to apply for Economics (Hons)
Officials said the logic behind making maths compulsory for the best of four is to prepare students for industry skills like data crunching and analytics.
