The Ministry of Finance has said that generating e-way bills would be mandatory for local transportation of goods in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana from 15 Apil, reports Mint. Karnataka had implemented it for local shipments from 1 April when e-way bills were mandated for interstate shipments nation-wide.
A statement from the ministry said that more than six million e-way bills were generated till 9 April.
The e-way bill system is an anti-evasion feature of the GST regime that came into effect on 1 July last year. It requires businesses to register on a portal to generate the document to prevent manipulation of the value of goods being transported. Policy makers are hopeful that the system will help integrate cash-driven informal transactions into a formal economy and boost GST revenues that have been stagnating for the last three months.
