Minister of External Affairs and BJP leader Sushma Swaraj has announced that she won’t be contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
“It is the party which decides, but I have made up my mind not to contest next elections,” Swaraj shared her decision with the ANI in Madhya Pradesh.
As per an Economic Times report, Swaraj has cited health reasons as being the reason for her not to contest the elections. She had undergone a kidney transplant in 2016.
Swaraj is one of the senior most leaders of the BJP and is a sitting Member of Parliament from Vidisha constituency in Madhya Pradesh, which she retained in 2014 with a margin of over 4 lakh votes.
Swaraj has had an illustrious career as a politician - she is seven times elected Member of Parliament and three times elected Member of Legislative Assembly. She famously became the youngest cabinet minister of Haryana at the age of 25.
As per reports, the BJP might now opt for the Rajya Sabha route to send her to Parliament.
