In spite of being a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Saudi Arabia has administered the brutal sentence of crucifixion to a convict , Bloomberg has reported.

The convict who was crucified was a Myanmarese national who was found guilty of murder and theft. The man was executed and crucified in the holy city of Mecca. Elias Abulkalaam Jamaleddeen, the convict had broken into the home of Myanmarese woman and stabbed her to death. In addition to this he is accused of stealing weapons to kill another man and attempting to rape a woman.

The ruling was delivered by the country’s Supreme Court and endorsed by the King. Crucifixions in Saudi Arabia entail hanging the dead body in public after execution according to the report. A Yemeni was crucified in 2010 after raping and murder of a girl. The accused had also killed the girl’s father.

Saudi Arabia is currently embroiled in an argument with Canada over alleged human rights violations. Canada had demanded the release of women’s rights activists. In its rebuttal, Saudi Arabia had criticised the arrest of holocaust deniers. Saudi Arabia has accused Canada of interfering in the internal affairs of the Saudi Kingdom.
