Former Kolkata Police commissioner and the present West Bengal CID Additional Director General Rajeev Kumar has been given interim protection from arrest by the Calcutta High Court in the ongoing CBI investigation into the Saradha chit fund scam, reports Bar & Bench.

“For a period of one month from the date of reopening or until further order, whichever is earlier, the petitioner shall not be subjected to coercive process or be arrested…,” read the order passed by Justice Protik Prakash Banerjee.

Several conditions have been attached by the court with regard to the interim protection, among them that Kumar has to cooperate with the CBI probe and has to submit his passport to the agency.

Moreover, Kumar has stay to his current residential address, the exception being if he requires medical treatment in an emergency; his attendance would get marked each single day at 4 pm by officers from the CBI.

Kumar has been accused by the CBI of tampering with material evidence in the Saradha scam in order to protect the accused.
