Exquisite Coffees Of India: Suresh Prabhu’s Ministry Accords Prestigious GI Tag To Five Varieties

In a bid to promote and boost the exports of the sundry exquisite Indian coffee flavours, Suresh Prabhu led Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry has accorded the prestigious ‘Geographical Indication’ (GI) tag to Araku Valley Coffee along with four other varieties of Indian coffee.
Others are Coorg Arabica Coffee, Chikmaglur Coffee and Bababudangriris Arabica Coffee of Karnataka, and Waynad Robusta Coffee. The GI tag will help all the five coffee brands get maximum market and price for their premium produce across the globe.
“It is a good development and the GI certification will help our Araku Valley Coffee to be specifically identified with its unique flavour and taste. It will also enhance the chances of getting maximum value/ price to our Araku Valley Coffee brand products,” said T Baburao Naidu, GCC vice-chairman and managing director.
To boost awareness about such products and their demand, Suresh Prabhu, Minister for Commerce & Industry had earlier this year (2019) launched the first government-owned exclusive GI store at Goa airport.
A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Darjeeling Tea was the first Indian product to get the geographical indication tag. In 2004, the famous beverage got the recognition.
