Slamming the Congress in an affidavit filled in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that the party’s claims about irregularities in the voters' lists in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are “false, incorrect and misleading", NDTV has said in a report.
"The Election Commission has taken all steps to verify the voters' list. The Congress's allegations are false, incorrect and misleading. Their petition must be dismissed," the channel has quoted the body as saying.
This development comes after the apex court had asked the ECI to file its response on the petition filed by Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Sachin Pilot alleging duplication of voters in the lists in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The ECI has also criticised the Congress for approaching the apex court with the intent of interfering in the functioning of the institution.
“The Congress party cannot approach the Supreme Court time and again and interfere in its functioning,” the poll panel said, according to India News.
“No valid and tenable grounds have been shown by the petitioner, Kamal Nath, to justify the grant of the interim relief (as prayed for) in his favour. Thus, the said petition sought to be dismissed outright,” the ECI’s affidavit read.
The poll panel also dismissed Congress’ proposal to use EVMs with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail in 10 per cent of polling stations.
