In a massive loss of its green cover and natural shade, Odisha capital Bhubaneswar lost over a million of its trees to the Fani cyclone that struck the state with heavy storms last week, reports The Times of India.

Those uprooted trees, withered out branches stand a sorry testimony for the devastation caused by an extremely severe cyclone on 3 May. It shall take at least a decade to recover the loss of its vital eco-assets, said the officials.

The forest department is working hard to rehabilitate the remaining trees, with 800 trees being recuperated over the last four days. A divisional forest officer, Ashok Mishra said, “It is impossible to assess the environmental damage as of now. The Patrapada locality alone has lost over lakh trees. We are pained to see those trees laying down on roads, we raised them like our kids.”

The forest department is now mulling to go for a huge plantation drive to dot the city-scape with cyclone resistant trees.
