Central Railway appears to have has struck gold last month. Not because of increased passenger traffic, but due to increased ticketless travellers, reports ANI. The zone has mopped up a record revenue of Rs 42.15 crore through fines from unauthorised travellers between the months of April and May 2018.

As many as 7.5 lakh cases of ticketless travel and unbooked luggage were detected by the zonal railway officials during this period. The entire collection for FY2017-18 meanwhile stood at Rs 153 crore, the period ending 31 March 2018.

The year-on-year increase in number of cases in the April-May period meanwhile stood at 4.7 per cent, Central Railways said in a statement.

In addition to this, as many as 1,517 cases of transfer of reserved journey tickets were detected and Rs. 12.77 lakh recovered towards penalty.

The record collection points to better policing and enforcement of rules in the Central Railways, in-line with the general trend in Indian Railways. The national carrier had earlier this week announced that it’ll begin enforcing weight restrictions in trains, a rule that was unheard of to most. The drive towards enforcing the weight constraints per passenger was launched on 1 June.
