Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, a rabid Pakistani Islamic scholar, who is considered the 'Father of the Taliban' was found murdered in his home in Rawalpindi a day ago. Some media reports said he was stabbed to death, while others say there were gunshots on his person. The motive of the death, however, is not yet clear. Haq headed the Haqqania madrasa in north Pakistan, where many Taliban members including Mullah Omar studied.

The cleric's son, Maulana Hamid-ul-Haq, claimed his father was stabbed multiple times while he was resting during Asr time when his driver-cum-guard went out for around 15 minutes, in an interview to Pakistan's Geo TV.

No group has so far taken responsibility for the attack.

The 80-plus Maulana was a senator and headed a faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and was a close associate of current Prime Minister Imran Khan. Imran Khan, who is currently on a trip to Beijing, meanwhile, condemned the killing and has ordered an investigation into the murder.

The murder, feel certain Pakistani journalists, may snowball into a major law and order situation with the Supreme Court of Pakistan recently acquitting a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, of blasphemy charges.
