At least six Hindus were among the 96 people killed by in clashes in Myanmar’s Rakhine state as extremists belonging to the Rohingya ethnic minority attacked security forces deployed in the region, Associated Press has reported.
According to a Yangon-based Burmese news website Eleven Myanmar, the killing took place when a family of 12 Hindus were returning to their hometown, Maungdaw, in the western part of the state, from a nearby town.
The terrorists, who were hiding in a building, shot dead six of them as they rushed to take refuge in an under construction building after hearing gunfire. Two men, a woman and three children were among the dead. Two other women were seriously wounded in the incident while four children managed to escape.
This attack was the latest in the series violent attacks perpetrated by terrorists in Myanmar. The Rakhine state, home to one million Rohingya Muslims, has been the scene of these violent attacks staged against security forces.
Myanmar state media reported on Tuesday (29 August) that more than 110 people had died since Friday's "coordinated attacks by extremist terrorists."
While thousands of Rohingyas, who say they are fleeing violence in the country, have made it across the border with Bangladesh, many have migrated to other parts of the world including India. In August, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told Parliament that more than 14,000 Rohingyas, registered with the UNHCR, are presently staying in different parts of India. Around 40,000 Rohingyas are believed to be staying illegally in the country.
The Union government has asked states to identify and deport illegal immigrants like the Rohingyas as they pose a grave security threat to the country.
