In a true display of friendship, a man from Ranchi city of Jharkhand covered a distance of around 1,300 kilometres in 24 hours to deliver life-saving oxygen gas to his covid-19 affected friend who wasn’t getting oxygen support in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

As per the India Today report, Devendra Kumar Sharma, a 38-year-old schoolteacher, received an SOS call on 24 April from his friend Sanjay Saxena, who informed him that their friend Rajan was in urgent need of oxygen.

Rajan, who had earlier tested positive for Covid-19, was left with oxygen supply for just 24 hours and due to a shortage of medical oxygen in Delhi-NCR, Rajan’s friends and family were unable to procure oxygen cylinders for him.

After receiving the frantic phone call, Devendra set out for Bokaro to procure the oxygen cylinder, which turned out to be a mammoth task for him. After endless attempts, he finally contacted the owner of Jharkhand Gas Plant, Rakesh Kumar Gupta who not only gave him the gas cylinder but also refused to take payment from him, saying that he should look after his friend first.

After getting the cylinder, he set out for over 1,300 km long journey to Ghaziabad in a borrowed car. In the 24 hours long journey, he was stopped twice by the police — in Bihar and UP — but was allowed to proceed after he explained the critical condition of his friend. Due to his heroic and untiring efforts, Rajan was able to get oxygen and is now stable.

“My friend is stable now. I will stay in Noida till he recovers fully,” Devendra said on Tuesday.

This commendable effort by Sharma brings out the true meaning of the lyrics of a famous old song -
tere jaisa yaar kahaan, kahaan aisa yaaraana
yaad karegee duniya, tera mera afasaana”
