Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Friday morning (20 March) tendered his resignation during a press conference ahead of the trust vote in the state assembly.

The Supreme Court yesterday (20 March) had ordered that a floor test be carried out before 5 PM today, while ruling on a petition filed by the BJP.

Unlike erstwhile Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, Kamal Nath chose to avoid a trust vote in the house.

The Kamal Nath led government which was reeling under the resignations by 22 of its MLAs had attempted to stall the trust vote proceedings by adjourning the house till 26 March while citing the coronavirus pandemic.

The 22 MLAs are said to be loyal to senior leader Jyotiraditya Scindia who recently switched over to the BJP.

The remaining Congress MLAs have been quoted by media outlets as saying that they are ready to sit in the opposition.

One BJP MLA from the state today tendered his resignation to the speaker which brought down the strength of the house to 205 with the halfway mark being 103. The BJP currently has 106 MLAs.
