General Electric Locomotives To Power Indian Railways: Adani Ports Completes Import, Delivery Of 50 Engines

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) on Wednesday (26 December) said that they had completed the import and delivery of 50 US-made General Electric (GE) locomotives for Indian Railways. APSEZ is the largest private multi-port operator in India and is part of the Adani Group.

Livemint reports that the Mundra Port imported all 50 engines which were manufactured at the GE division, US. APSEZ has ten strategically located ports and terminals, which represent 24 per cent of India’s total port capacity.

The company, in a statement, said, “Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) successfully concluded the import and dispatch of 50 General Electric Transportation (GE) locomotives from Mundra port for the Indian Railways with full customer satisfaction and ‘zero’ incident."

Indian Railways had received the final locomotive at the UP’s Roza Loco Shed on 23 November 2018 The commissioning of the locomotives happened in between October 2017 and November 2018, a record for in the logistics and ports sector.

The statement highlights the instrumental role of the port in the logistics of wagons for other pan-India Metro projects, heavy duty air-cranes (helicopter) and 240 MT capacity mining dump trucks.

The statement also terms Mundra Port as a unique distinction which can handle shipments which are critical for development and nation’s defence.

The current import of the GE locomotives is the largest import shipment since 1962 when the Indian Railways had imported the WDM2 ALCO locomotives. Adani Port had handled the first GE locomotive that was shipped to Mundra in October 2017.
