Gogoi, Khanna Say No: SC Declines Plea Seeking Monitoring Of CBI Investigation Into Saradha Chit Fund Scam

The Supreme Court on Monday (11 February) dismissed a petition seeking monitoring of the ongoing investigation by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the Saradha chit fund scam in West Bengal, Economic Times has reported.
According to the report, the petition, filed by some investors, stated that despite the apex court’s 2013 order directing the CBI to probe the chit fund scam, not much progress has been made in the investigation and it is yet to reach finality.
However, a two-judge bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna refused to monitor the ongoing probe into the chit fund scam.
“We are not inclined to set up a monitoring committee to monitor the chit fund scam probe,” the bench was quoted in the report as saying.
Earlier, last week, the CBI officials were detained by the Kolkata police when they arrived at the residence of Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to question him in connection with the Saradha chit fund case.
Saradha group had allegedly raised money from lakhs of small investors over several years in West Bengal and adjoining states. The scam came to notice when the company failed to return the money. Following this, top politicians and company owners involved in the scam were arrested, including former Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh and owner of the group Sudipta Sen.
