The portals of the holy Himalayan Shrine of Shri Kedarnath in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district will open on 17 May.

Shri Kedarnath temple, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas spread across the country, remains closed for devotees of Lord Shiva for around six months in winter due to heavy snowfall in the region.

The temple is one of the four holy shrines, 'Chardham', situated in Uttarakhand. The other three 'Dhams' are Shri Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri temples.

According to the Uttarakhand information department, the idol of Lord Shiva will leave Ukhimath's Omkareshwar Temple in a palanquin. It should be noted that Lord Kedar is worshipped in the Omkareshwar Temple during winter.

The palanquin of Lord Kedar will reach Gaurikund on 15 May and Kedarnath on 16 May.

The portals of the Kedarnath temple will be opened on 17 May at 5 am in the morning with dharmic rituals amid chanting of vedic hymns.

The auspicious hour and date for the reopening of the famous Himalayan shrine in Uttarakhand was announced at a religious ceremony held on the occasion of Shivratri at the Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath.
