The legend of Carnatic music, Dr M Balamuralikrishna breathed his last today at his home in Chennai. He was 86.

Dr. Balamuralikrishna was born in Sankaraguptham in Andhra Pradesh and started singing when he was all of eight years old. Besides possessing unsurpassed skills as a vocalist, he was also a consummate player of the violin, viola, ganjira, veena and mridangam.

He was famous for ‘Bhakthi Ranjani’, a morning programme at the AIR.

Besides, being a most sought-after artist of the Carnatic school, Dr Balamuralikrishna also gave numerous performances in collaboration with Hindustani artistes.

He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the President of India in 1991.
