Following the addition of Huawei in the trade blacklist by the Trump administration on Thursday (16 May), Google suspended some of its business with the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, reports Reuters.

According to the report, the United States Commerce Department said on Friday (17 May) that it was considering scaling back restrictions on Huawei to “prevent the interruption of existing network operations and equipment”.

Google, which is the subsidiary of the Alphabet Inc, complying with the decision suspended services which require the transfer of hardware, software and technical services to Huawei while the ones which are available publicly through open source are allowed to be used on their devices.

Speaking about the ban, Google Spokesperson without giving further details said, “For users, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices,”

Popular apps like Gmail, YouTube and the Chrome browser, which are available through Google’s Play Store will not be available for the future Huawei handsets as they are not covered by the open source license and require a commercial agreement with Google.

The ban might not have a significant impact on Huawei Chinese market as most of Google products are banned in that country.

As per the report, the Huawei said that it has spent last few years preparing a contingency plan by developing its own technology in case it is blocked from using Android. Some of this technology is already being used in products sold in China, the company said.

The European market, however, will take a significant hit as Huawei extensively licenses Google Apps and services in the region.
