In a positive development, Union Rural Development Ministry announced today (1 August) that land records have successfully been digitised in 23 States and Union Territories (UTs) in the country, reports Economic Times.

Under the Government's Digital India Land Record Modernisation Programme (DILRMP), registration of land, cadastral maps and land records have been completely computerised in more than 90 per cent of the states, the ministry said in a statement.

Underscoring the need and significance of error-free, tamper proof and effortlessly accessible land records, Union Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar asserted that this has been a focus in India over the years.

Tomar emphasised that a good land records system is a necessity for any harmonious and progressive society.

The progress made in this area is also likely to help push India further up the ranks on the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) index. In the last edition of the same, India had scored a poor rank of 154 in 'Registering Property' header.
