The Union government is likely to introduce the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha as soon as next week, with the Union Minister for Defence, Rajnath Singh instructing the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Members of Parliament (MPs) against absenteeism from the Parliament, reports The Hindu.
Speaking to fellow BJP MPs at the parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday (3 December), Singh said that the bill would be tabled in the Parliament next week, with the Cabinet expected to clear it by Wednesday (4 December).
At the meeting, Singh also asserted that the Citizenship Amendment Bill was as important a legislation for the Centre as was the nullification of the Article 370 in the previous session.
Singh was presiding over the affairs of the meeting in place of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, given the PM was engaged in the election campaign in the state of Jharkhand, where five-phase assembly polls are currently underway.
